If you’ve ever had your home repiped with PEX water lines routed through the attic, don’t be surprised if your “cold” water isn’t very cold during a Louisiana summer.
Attic temperatures can easily climb well above 130°F, and every foot of cold-water PEX sitting up there absorbs that heat. The longer the pipe sits between uses, the warmer the water inside becomes. When you first turn on the faucet, you’re not getting cool water from the underground water main—you’re getting the water that’s been baking in your attic.
Depending on how long the pipe run is, it can take anywhere from several seconds to over a minute before truly cold water reaches the faucet. That’s completely normal and doesn’t necessarily mean there’s anything wrong with your plumbing system.
PEX itself isn’t the problem. In fact, it’s an excellent material that’s resistant to corrosion, freezing damage, and many of the issues that affect older copper and galvanized piping. The tradeoff is simply that any water line routed through a superheated attic—whether it’s PEX or copper—will warm up between uses.
If you’re considering a whole-home repipe, keep this in mind. Routing water lines through the attic often avoids cutting into concrete slabs and can save thousands of dollars in labor and future repair costs. The brief wait for cold water is usually a small price to pay compared to the expense and disruption of repairing leaks beneath a slab.
