Most people don’t associate plumbing problems with thunderstorms, but lightning can absolutely damage copper water lines. A nearby lightning strike can send an enormous electrical surge through the ground and into a home’s plumbing and electrical systems. Because copper is an excellent conductor of electricity, that surge can create enough heat and energy to rupture or pinhole a copper water line, leading to hidden leaks inside walls, under slabs, or in the attic.

If you notice a sudden drop in water pressure, unexplained wet spots, the sound of running water, or an unusually high water bill after a severe thunderstorm, don’t assume it’s a coincidence. A lightning-related plumbing failure is uncommon, but it does happen.

At American Plumbing, we’ve seen firsthand how lightning can leave homeowners dealing with unexpected water damage. If you suspect a leak after a storm, having it located and repaired quickly can help prevent costly structural damage and mold growth. When Mother Nature strikes, your plumbing may need attention too.
