Reducing a 3/4” waterline to 1/2” waterline is another epic wannabe plumber fail!
Reducing a 3/4” waterline down to a 1/2” line might not sound like a big deal. After all, it’s only a quarter of an inch! What could possibly go wrong? 😂
Well… your shower may be the first one to file a complaint.
A 3/4” waterline can deliver substantially more water than a 1/2” line, especially when several fixtures are running at the same time. Reduce that line too early or use too much 1/2” piping, and suddenly everybody in the house is fighting over water.
🚿 Someone jumps in the shower.
🚽 Somebody flushes the toilet.
🧺 The washing machine fills.
And the person in the shower starts yelling, “WHO TURNED ON THE WATER?!”
The problem isn’t simply the pipe diameter—it’s the increased friction and reduced flow capacity of the smaller piping, particularly over longer distances and during simultaneous demand. Your static pressure may look perfectly fine, but available flow and pressure at the fixtures can suffer once the water starts moving.
There are plenty of situations where 1/2” piping is completely appropriate, especially individual fixture branches. But taking a properly sized 3/4” supply and unnecessarily choking it down to 1/2” can turn a healthy plumbing system into a drinking straw trying to supply a fire hose.
Pipe sizing matters!
And remember: plumbing is a terrible place to say, “Eh, close enough!” 😂🔧💦
