Using mouthwash while sitting on the toilet might seem like an efficient way to multitask, but it comes with a few drawbacks—some practical, some hygienic, and some just plain funny.

Imagine this: you’re trying to freshen your breath while sitting in one of the germiest places in the house. Every time a toilet is flushed, especially with the lid up, tiny droplets containing bacteria and other microorganisms can become airborne in what’s often called a “toilet plume.” If your mouthwash bottle is open, or if you’re actively swishing, you’re doing it in an environment that’s less than ideal for oral hygiene.

There’s also the issue of effectiveness. Most mouthwashes recommend swishing for 30 to 60 seconds. That means you’re trying to concentrate on cleaning your mouth while also taking care of business. Chances are you’ll rush one task or the other, defeating the purpose of both.

Then there’s the risk of accidents. If you laugh, cough, or get distracted while swishing mouthwash, you could accidentally swallow some or make a mess. It’s not dangerous in small amounts for most adults, but mouthwash isn’t meant to be consumed.

And let’s not ignore the optics. If someone walks in and sees you sitting on the toilet with a bottle of mouthwash, they may wonder if you’ve invented a new hygiene routine or simply taken multitasking a little too far.

From a practical standpoint, it’s better to keep bathroom routines separate:

* Use the toilet.

* Wash your hands thoroughly.

* Then brush and use mouthwash at the sink.

That sequence keeps your oral hygiene products away from unnecessary germs and allows you to give each task your full attention.

As a humorous public service announcement: Your toothbrush and mouthwash deserve a better audience than your toilet. Fresh breath is great—but it doesn’t have to happen at the exact same time you’re making room for breakfast.
