NATURAL GAS, PROPANE, AND THE AMAZING WORLD OF WANNABE PLUMBERS! ππ§
I went out to look at a plumbing job the other day that required propane. Everything seemed pretty straightforward until I took a look at the tankless water heater.
Right there on the manufacturer’s label, plain as day, it said NATURAL GAS!
Not propane. Not dual fuel. NATURAL GAS!
Now, I’ve been plumbing long enough to know that some tankless water heaters can be converted from natural gas to propane, provided the manufacturer approves it and the proper conversion procedures are followed.
But here’s a crazy idea: HOW ABOUT WE VERIFY THAT BEFORE WE HOOK IT UP?
Apparently, reading the manufacturer’s label has become an advanced plumbing skill requiring three certifications, two continuing education classes, and a functioning brain cell!
Some people seem to believe that natural gas and propane are interchangeable. Just hook up the gas line, turn on the valve, and hope Jesus is watching!
Well, I’ve got news for you. Propane and natural gas operate differently, and installing the wrong equipment can create a dangerous situation.
I don’t care if your cousin Bubba says he’s been doing it that way for 30 years. That doesn’t make it right. It just means Bubba has been lucky for 30 years!
The moral of the story? Just because you can screw two fittings together doesn’t mean you know what you’re doing!
At American Plumbing, we’d rather verify the equipment, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and do it right than turn somebody’s tankless water heater into a backyard science experiment.
